Nearly 80 percent of the vanilla exports went to the United States, Head of the Export Section at the Bali Provincial Industry and Trade Office Putu Bagiada said here on Saturday.
Bagiada said rising demand in the export market was responsible for the increase in vanilla exports in the five-month period.
The growing demand for vanilla in the export market would hopefully encourage Balinese farmers to cultivate the commodity on large scale, he said.
He said the vanilla exports in the January-May 2010 period came not only from Bali but also the rest of Indonesia.
Many local vanilla growers seemed to be reluctant to develop the commodity on large scale because they were still traumatized by stem rot pest which could kill vanilla plant, he said.
Vanilla is currently grown on 806 hectares of land in Bali.
Actually, the province had 4,500 hectares of land suitable for vanilla cultivation, he said.
In 2008, Bali produced around 33 tons of vanilla, up significantly compared to 22 tons a year earlier, he said.(*)
