"We have prepared a law to impose the severest possible sanctions on criminals in the forestry sector with a minimum jail term of 10 years," Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said after opening a "Global Tiger Initiative-World Bank" meeting at Ayodya Hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Monday.
The lenient penalty meted out to those involved in endangered animal thefts had made it difficult to control the hunting for protected animals such as Sumatran tigers, he said.
"In the past they were subject to a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail. Under the law, the maximum sentence of 10 years will be changed into minimum sentence," he said.
The severest possible sentence was intended to protect endangered animals such as Sumatran tigers which are now on the brink of extinction, he said.(*)
