"Overcoming a seaport problem cannot be done in a makeshift manner. Now the existing port infrastructure does not match the need for high economic growth," Finance Deputy Minister Mahendra Siregar said commenting on the conditions of Tanjung Priok Seaport in North Jakarta, on Friday.
He said that the infrastructure of Tanjung Priok port was not enough to accommodate a high economic growth because the flow of imports and exports was not yet smooth.
"Our infrastructure is insufficient. So, if we want to make progress, there must be a change with standard equal to that of a modern state, or otherwise, it will have risks that would hamper economic growth," the finance deputy minister said.
He said that it was not easy to overcome the problem of dwelling time at the port because the outflow and inflow of cargoes at the port faced a traffic density problem due to limited road spaces.
However, he said, stakeholders at the port were now having coordination to solve the problem while waiting for the completion of a toll road being developed in the area.
"It is not possible for us to build a new port in a short time, moreover, if it is related to land clearance. The present condition is not enough to facilitate continuous growth," Mahendra said. (*/DWA)
