Denpasar (Antara Bali) - General elections in Indonesia, including elections of regional and local administration heads, are still disappointing, according to Chairman of the General Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) Muhammad.

"We have noticed that elections in Indonesia are still disappointing and far from expected in implementing democracy," Muhammad said here on Friday when speaking before participants a training course on general election supervision for the media and mass organizations.

The cost of elections of regional and local heads (pilkada) is always above Rp1 billion, and in some provinces it could even reach Rp1 trillion, he said.

"The most expensive elections of regional head happened in East Java when the local elections had to be carried out for two rounds using up funds worth Rp1 trillion," he said.

The results of most local elections, however, were not worth the high cost for the local community as well as the local administrations, he said. Besides, the community did not benefit quality political education. (*/DWA)
