Mataram (Antara Bali) - Farmers and cattle raisers dominate West Nusa Tenggara (NTB)'s hajj pilgrims every year, suggesting that the development of the agricultural sector in the province is quite successful, an official said.

Head of the hajj and minor hajj (umrah) section at the provincial religious affairs office Ma'ad Umar said here on Thursday 1,738 of the province's hajj pilgrims in 2012 were farmers and cattle raisers.

"Most of the farmers performing hajj pilgrimage came from East Lombok District with 518 and Central Lombok with 332, while most of cattle raisers performing hajj pilgrimage came from Sumbawa with 347," he said.

He said the hajj pilgrims from East Lombok and Central Lombok districts were mostly virginia tobacco farmers.

Normally, the number of people who register for hajj pilgrimage in the two areas increases when tobacco harvest is good and tobacco price is high.

Similarly, the number of  hajj pilgrims in Sumbawa will increase when the cow and buffalo prices are high, he said. (*/DWA)
