Kuta (Antara Bali) - Customs authorities at Ngurah Rai Airport on the resort island of Bali have arrested Italian Daniele Pieretto on charges of smuggling 1,430 grams of hashish.

"We arrested him shortly after he arrived at this airport on a flight from New Delhi via Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (March 29)," I Made Wijaya, chief of the airport's customs control and service office, said here on Saturday.

The 33-year-old Italian, who came to Bali aboard a Malaysian Airlines plane, hid the hashish in the hollow of a bag by wrapping it in tape, he said.

If found guilty, Pieretto may be sentenced to death and fined a maximum of Rp10 billion pursuant to Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics.(*/T007)
