Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia has been chosen to represent Asia Pacific countries in the Paris Committee on Capacity Building (PCCB), which is tasked with discussing capacity building in the management of climate change in developing nations.
"The PCCB is very strategic for Indonesia and other developing nations to implement the Paris Agreement," Nur Masripatin, Director General of Climate Change Control at the Environment and Forestry Ministry, said in a press statement released on Friday. Nur Masripatin, as a member of the Indonesian National Focal Point for Climate Change Control, said the Indonesian membership in the PCCB has given it a chance to voice the interests of developing countries, particularly in Asia and the Pacific, on the need for and disparities in capacity building programs related to climate change.
The need for capacity building and the importance of funding support have become areas of attention from developing nations all the time, he said.
They have considered Indonesia suitable to represent Asia and the Pacific in the PCCB owing to its adequate capacity, he said.
In addition, Indonesia also has extensive experiences in climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, he said.
He underscored the need for any developing nation to have adequate capacity to implement the Paris Agreement. "Without adequate capacity, it is difficult for developing countries to meet the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions," he said.
Given the full support from the Asia Pacific countries, 12 members of the PCCB will be endorsed at the plenary session of the Conference of Parties (COP) 22 next week, Hari Prabowo, a member of the negotiating team from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, said.
With the endorsement, Indonesia will legally and effectively start its duties in the PCCB.
Chief of the Indonesian negotiation delegation Achmad Gunawan said Indonesia expects the first PCCB meeting to be held in Bonn in 2017 to focus on formulating annual work plan until 2020.
In the second year, Indonesia has suggested that the PCCB focus on vulnerability and underscore the importance of cooperation between the PCCB and the Committee of Loss and Damage. (WDY)
