Palembang, S Sumatra (Antara Bali) - The Trade Ministry has set itself the target of revitalizing 1,000 traditional market this year as part of efforts to revitalize some 5,000 traditional market by the end of 2019.

Director of Distribution and Logistics Facilities at the Trade Ministry Sihard Hadjopan said on the sidelines of a people's market festival here on Saturday  878 traditional markets have been revitalized so far this year.

He said 168 of the 878 traditional markets were revitalized through assistance funds and 710 through special allocation funds from the state budget.

"This year the budget allocations reach Rp2.4 trillion comprising assistance funds worth Rp1.4 trillion and special allocation funds worth Rp1 trillion," he said.

Last year, the Trade Ministry revitalized a total of 1,002 traditional markets by repairing market buildings to make them better and attractive, he said.

He said some traditional markets have not been revitalized as many regional governments have not been ready to prepare land for the construction of traditional markets.

The land for the construction of the traditional markets is still disputed, he noted.

"To construct or revitalize markets, each region must prepare a plot of land equipped with land titles. The land must have clear status and belong to the regional government," he said.

After all, provincial, district and municipal governments should not hesitate to propose the revitalization of traditional markets as the proposal will be verified at a central government level, he said.  (WDY)
