Bandung, W Java (Antara Bali)- Former president and chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Pajajaran, here, Wednesday.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla, several ministers, prominent national figures, and senior politicians of the PDIP, among others.

Megawati expressed pride and was moved on being awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa degree for politics and administration from the University of Pajajaran, her alma mater.

Megawati recalled when she became a student of the university 51 years ago.

The country's fifth president said she was just 18 years when she joined the university's faculty of agriculture in keeping with the wishes of her father, Indonesian first president Soekarno, though her true interest was in psychology.

Megawati's father believed that agriculture was crucial as farmers constituted most of the country's population, and food sovereignty was vital for the nation's survival. (WDY)
