Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Michael William Czugaj, an Australian drug convict, has been moved from Bali's Krobokan Prison to Madiun Penitentiary in East Java in a bid to disrupt drug trafficking networks in the prison, an official stated.
"His addiction is so strong that we decided to move him," Head of the Penitentiaries Division of the Bali Provincial office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry Nyoman Putra Surya noted here on Wednesday.
The decision to move William to the Malang Penitentiary was made to prevent him from establishing contacts with drug trafficking networks in Bali, he emphasized.
Hence, William's transfer was not related to a recent riot that broke out in the Krobokan Prison. Instead, it was purely related to an effort to dismantle drug trafficking networks within the Bali prison, Surya clarified.
The Krobokan Prison's wardens had repeatedly found the Australian drug convict with the "remnants" of shabu-shabu, though he had denied being a drug dealer, Surya stated.
William told the prison wardens that he solely used the crystal methamphetamine obtained from visitors, Nyoman noted, adding that the lack of strong evidence had hindered investigation into this case.
The prison wardens had merely recovered the remnants of crystal meth that William had used, he pointed out.
William is one of the members of the "Bali Nine" drug ring, a group of drug traffickers who were arrested on April 17, 2005, in Bali while attempting to smuggle 8.3 kilograms of heroin worth Rp40 billion into Australia.
William is serving life term. Besides him, six other inmates have also been moved to the Malang Penitentiary.
They are all Iranians, who are also drug convicts serving life sentence.
"These Iranians reportedly like creating a ruckus with other foreign inmates," he pointed out.
The convicts will be placed in different cells in their new prison in the East Java city of Malang, he added.(WDY)
