Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Corruption in public services poses a serious constraint to the efforts to boost investment and economic growth, Secretary General of Transparency International Indonesia (TII) Dadang Trisasongko stated.
"It is a serious constraint if the system is not improved totally. I have tried to remind the government since long that a serious corruption problem exists in public services, particularly in the business licensing and logistics services," Trisasongko remarked here on Tuesday.
He pointed out that corruption occurs in public services not only in Jakarta but also in other provinces.
Based on the corruption perception index in 11 cities launched by the TII, it could be observed that the business licensing system in the region still posed a serious problem.
"The government of Joko Widodo-Jusuf Kalla should carry out comprehensive improvements in the system to eliminate corrupt practices, so that investment and economic growth will increase," he emphasized.
In this case, he said the Widodo government faces the challenge of restoring the credibility of its law enforcement.
Moreover, his government's credibility with regard to legal enforcement was tarnished as a result of criminalization by anti-corruption activists, leaders, and investigators of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Trisasongko noted.
Trisasongko stated that accusations had been leveled against anti-corruption activists and leaders of the KPK for the last 10 months, which had resulted in dwindling public trust in the police and the prosecutors.
"Joko Widodo must order the police and prosecutor's office to stop criminalization practices," he affirmed.
Trisasongko remarked that the government, in its second year under Widodo, should focus on ensuring the implementation of reforms in the police and prosecutor institutions.
The Widodo-Kalla government also has homework to accomplish with regard to the weakening of the KPK. (WDY)
