Jambi (Antara Bali) - As many as 22 flights to and from the Sultan Thaha Syaifudin Airport in Jambi province were cancelled on Monday because of haze.

The airlines that canceled their flights were Garuda Indonesia, LionAir, CitiLink and NamAir, the airport's acting General Manager, Gurit Setiawan, said on Monday.

"Not a single plane has landed at the airport today. Many airlines have cancelled their flights. Ten flights flying to and 12 flights departing from the airport have been cancelled, meaning that a total of 22 flights have been cancelled," he said.

By Monday evening, 13 airlines had postponed their flights to and from the airport. But with visibility continuing to fall, these 13 flights are likely be cancelled, Syaifudin added.

"Seven flights going to and six flights departing from the airport have been postponed. If the haze remains thick, these flights will be automatically cancelled," he said.

The thick smoke, which has been blanketing the airport for the past few days, has prompted airlines to cease operations until the weather returns to normal.

The airlines that have decided to cancel flights for the next few days are Garuda Indonesia, with flight numbers 128-129, GA 130-131, GA 7114-7115. LionAir, with flight numbers JT 138-139, and NamAir, with flight numbers NAM 9060-9886, NAM 9061-9062, NAM 9887-9063.

On Friday, 12 flights from the airport were also cancelled due to the haze. "By Friday evening, not a single plane had landed at the Sulthan Thaha Airport in Jambi and several flights were cancelled. This morning, only the Jakarta-bound Garuda plane flew out of the airport after being parked there overnight," the airport's Operations Chief, Parolan Simanjuntak, said last Friday.

Normally, the airport caters to 36 flights to and from the airport per day.

Among the airlines flying to the Sulthan Thaha Airport are Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Nam Airlines, Sriwijaya Airlines, City Link, and Susi Air.

On Thursday, only one Garuda plane had landed at the airport at 08.30 p.m., Simanjuntak said. (WDY)
