Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia, through its Trade Ministry, increased exports to Oman in a bid to sustain profitable trade between the two countries.

"The Trade Ministry believes that Indonesia and Oman can establish better economic relations since diplomatic relations between the two countries have existed since 1978," Director General of Foreign Trade Partogi Pangaribuan remarked here on Wednesday.

"We hope that the volume of trade can be increased. We trade several items between Indonesia and Oman. We mutually promote trade and investment in order to increase exports to 300 percent in five years," he affirmed.

Partogi noted that the relations between Indonesia and Oman are viewed as sound, and the two countries had mutual appreciation for each other's products.

The total balance of trade between Indonesia and Oman had increased in the last five years and had reached US$400 million in 2013.

Indonesia had experienced a trade surplus during the 2008-2010 period, despite a drop in the 2011-2012 period. Indonesia recorded around US$200 million trade surplus with Oman during the period between January and September 2014.

Sukanto, the Indonesian ambassador to Oman, stated that the trade with the Middle Eastern country has immense potential.

"Most of the goods used in Oman are imported. So, when we sell anything, it will be purchased," he noted.

Despite having a small population of about four million people, Oman has a per capita income of US$26 thousand.

"Unfortunately, goods are imported from Dubai. So, if we can initiate direct trade, it may be more profitable," he emphasized.

Member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Oman Ali Saleh Ali Alkabani expressed interest in handicraft products, furniture, tourism, fashion, and industry.

In addition, Oman imports several products such as palm oil and its derivatives, rubber, and automotive as well as cocoa, coffee, and other food products.

"We are proud to strengthen our relationship with Indonesia. We will encourage businesses to immediately invest in Indonesia," Oman noted. (WDY)
