Bogor, W Java (Antara Bali) - Indonesia and China are increasing cooperation in fishery cultivation or aquaculture to boost investment and transfer of technology, noted Slamet Soebjakto, the director general of aquaculture of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

In his text message to Antara here on Tuesday, Slamet stated that the cooperation is expected to expand the marketing network of fishery products between Indonesia and China, particularly Hong Kong.

"The cooperation is aimed at attracting investors to invest in the fish farming sector and to implement the latest technology about aquatics in Indonesia," he stated.

He explained that Indonesia has 17.74 million hectares of area for aquaculture, which will be further increased.

"Supported by extensive area, technology, significant marketing network, and superior commodities of interest by the global market, Indonesia will continue to establish cooperation with other countries, including China," Slamet remarked.

He noted that the agenda for cooperation was discussed by Marine and Fisheries Minister Sharif C. Sutardjo during the APEC Ocean-related Ministerial Meeting recently held in Xiamen, Beijing, and Hong Kong.

Moreover, Slamet has also discussed the initiation of cooperation in the aquaculture sector with Guangdong Hengxing Group Co. Ltd and China Southern Association for International Friendly Contact.

He affirmed that Guangdong Hengxing Group Co. Ltd is one of the leading private companies in China, which focuses on feed products, aquatic products, seedling breeding, and domestic and international trade.

The company is engaged in the development of agriculture and has successfully integrated upstream and downstream industry resources.

It has established 11 feed processing enterprises in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and other coastal provinces and cities.

It has more than ten thousand multiple units of breeding bases, and annually processes 150 thousand tons of aquatic products.

Guangdong Hengxing Group Co. Ltd also has four seafood processors, located in Guangdong (Zhanjiang and Gaoyao), Guangxi (Beihai), and Hainan (Haikou) with its export value reaching millions of dollars.

"Through this cooperation, we can absorb the technology being applied by the company in China to expand the blue economy based aquaculture industry in Indonesia," he remarked. (WDY)
