Ambon, Maluku
(Antara Bali) - A provincial legislative candidate from Peoples
Conscious Party (Hanura) Abdul Rasyid Kotalima and his supporters sealed
a school building after failing to win enough votes to become a member
of parliament.
"On April 19, Abdul and his supporters entered a high school building located in the West Seram district and sealed it," a member of local NGO Peoples Voters Education Association (JPRR), Lutfi Wael, said here on Tuesday, adding that he had reported the incident to the local General Election Commission (KPU).
According to Lutfi, Abdul Rasyid sealed the school building at 10.00 a.m. when there were students in their class rooms. Apart from sealing the building, Abdul Rasyids supporters also entered the school yard and vented their rage at Abdul Rasyids failure to become a local parliament member.
"They went to that school because one of Abdul Rasyids competitors is a teacher there. Abdul Rasyid accused the teacher, Abu Silawane, of having misused the schools facility to support his candidacy in the election," Lutfi said.
The incident ended after local government officials called both Abdul Rasyid and Abu Silawane to broker peace.
Indonesia is holding two elections this year, namely the parliamentary election on April 9 and the presidential election on July 9.
The scheduled parliamentary election will choose 560 members of the House of Representatives (DPR), 132 members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), 2,137 members of the provincial legislative assembly and 20,257 members of the district/citys legislative assembly.
About 185.8 million Indonesians are eligible to cast their vote in the 2014 election. (WDY)
