Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, does not need to resign as Jakarta governor after being nominated by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) as its presidential candidate, an observer has said.

"If Jokowi relies only on a normative regulation, there is no obligation for him to resign as Jakarta governor, even until the 2014 presidential election polling day," the Public Synergy for Indonesian Democracy (Sigma) observer Said Salahudin said here on Sunday.

According to Salahudin, Jokowi only needs to submit a letter of permission to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the context of
ethical governance.

"The letter is as the fulfillment of the terms of his presidential candidacy to the General Election Commission (KPU). Jokowi even asks for a leave of absence to campaign for himself for the presidential election," he said.

Salahudin noted that according to the law on presidential election, Jokowi does not need to resign as the governor of Jakarta following his nomination as presidential candidate.
