Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Four of the 31 provinces affected by dengue fever in the January - June 2013 period reported extraordinary events, a health official said.
"The four provinces which reported extraordinary dengue outbreak over the last six months were Lampung, South Sulawesi, Central Kalimantan and Papua," Andi Muhadir, director for animal-originated disease control, said over the weekend.
He expressed hope that the number of deaths and patients who suffered from dengue in the second half of this year would be below the number of those in the same period in 2012.
A total of 90,245 patients across the country suffered from dengue in 2012. Of the figure, 816 died. In the January - June 2013 period, total number of patients was 48,905, of whom 376 died.
He said that 12 provinces reported increase in dengue cases (though not extraordinarily). They included East Java, Riau Islands, Central Java, Yogyakarta, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Bali, West Jusa Tenggara and North Maluku. (*/DWA)
