Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Twenty-two prisoners over terrorism cases escaped from the Tanjung Gusta Penitentiary in Medan, North Sumatra, on Thursday evening.

"It is estimated around 200 prisoners have broken out of the jail including the 22 terrorism prisoners. Right now police are still chasing them," National Police's head of public information bureau Brigadier General Boy Rafli Amar said.

Based on the police data the 22 terrorism prisoners that had fled are

"Among them are those involved in CIMB Niaga robbery and attacks of Hamparan Perak police station. Marwan is Toni Togar, the bomber in Pekanbaru. In the Siantar penitentiary he cooperated with Fadli Sadama, a narcotic, terrorism and CIMB robbery convict," he said.

The jailbreak and fire at Tanjung Gusta occurred due to rioting at the prison following power outage and water stoppage at 5am and 5.30pm, he said. "Prisoners then got angry, broke the main gate and burned the office," he said.

The number of prisoners at Tanjung Gusta right now is 2,599. It is estimated around 200 prisoners have escaped," Boy said. (*/DWA)
