Nusa Dua April 22 (Antara Bali) - The production of dried seaweed in the eastern Indonesian region is projected to reach 200,000 tons this year following an increasing number of seaweed processing industries there, an official has said.
"So far the capacity of dried seaweed production has been around 180,000 tons per year but in 2013 we will make every effort to increase it to 200,000 tons, Indonesian Seaweed Association (ARLI) Chairman Safari Azis said during the 21st International Seaweed Symposium (ISS) here on Monday.
He said that of the capacity of 180,000 tons, 169,000 tons with a total value of US$200 million were used to meet export market.
"Indonesia competes strongly with the Philippines in seaweed export market but the quality of our seaweed from `eucheuma cottonii` type remains number one in the world," said Safari said.
The national committee chairman of the International Seaweed Symposium added that Indonesia has 16 seaweed processing industries and most of them are in eastern part of the country.
Safari noted that with the increasing number of seaweed processing industries in the country, ARLI would ask the government to give incentive and other facility to seaweed farmers in remote areas.
"If possible, the government must abolish the taxes which indirectly hamper the progress of seaweed industry in the country," Safari suggested.
Indonesia is hosting the 21sth International Seaweed Symposium from April 21 to 26, 2013 in Nusa Dua, Bali, which is participated in by 700 participants from 50 countries. (M038)
