Kupang  (Antara Bali) - Poor weather conditions in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) hampered air traffic and disrupted flight schedules at El Tari Airport in Kupang on Thursday.

Over the past two days, bad weather has forced some airlines, especially those serving the domestic routes across the islands, to cancel their flights, particularly to Flores.

"The weather in Flores Island is very bad. Almost all flights to Flores were cancelled since Tuesday (January 8). And on Wednesday, there was only one flight to West Sumba  the rest were cancelled," said the Airport Duty Manager of El Tari Airport, Gabriel Keraf, here on Thursday.

On Thursday, only one Wings Air plane, serving the Kupang-Maumere-Denpasar-Surabaya route, was allowed to fly.

Other flights of Susi Air, Merpati, and TransNusa airlines, serving various routes, such as Kupang-Larantuka, Kupang-Ende, Kupang-Kalabahi, Kupang-bajawa, were cancelled.

Head of Observation of Meteorology Station Class II of El Tari Airport Syaiful Hadi said the East Nusa Tenggara region was affected by a tropical depression that not only triggered high waves and torrential rains, but also caused thick fog.

"The centre of the tropical depression is located in southwest of Sumba Island," he noted. (*/DWA/T007)
