Madiun (Antara Bali) - Six people were killed and dozens of others injured after their bus rammed into a food stall apparently to avoid a collision with a motorcycle at Jeruk Gulung village, Madiun district, East Java, early Sunday.

Chief of the Madiun police resort Adj. Comr. Nanang Juni Mawanto said police were concentrating on evacuating victims to the nearby hospital.

"Six people were killed in the scene. I don't know the number of injured victims yet. We have evacuated all the victims to Caruban hospital in Madiun district," he said.

Quoting the preliminary results of an investigation conducted by the police, he said the accident occurred as the bus was running at a high speed.

"We have not yet questioned the bus driver who is being treated for injury. Neither have we identified the motorcyclist. The dead victims are undergoing autopsy at the morgue of the Caruban hospital," he said.

Pardi who survived the accident said the ill-fated bus Sumber Kencono was running at a high speed apparently to catch up with other Sumber Kencono bus.

"The bus was trying to overtake another vehicle while at the same time a motorcycle came from the opposite direction," he said.

He said he did not know why the bus suddenly slipped and rammed into a food stall.

Because of the accident, traffic on the Jeruk Gulung section of Madiun-Surabaya highway was congested for a few hours.(T007)
