Gianyar (Antara Bali) - The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali moved to Keramas for day three of competition. Bali's famous right-hand reef break churned out clean 5-6 foot (2-2.5 meter) sets for the remaining eight heats of Men's Round 1.
Hawaii’s Keanu Asing (Ewa Beach, Oahu) started the day with style, taking off late and deep, then locked into a solid tube. "I couldn’t relax until the final siren," he said here, Wednesday.
The crowd roared as he came flying out and the judges awarded him a 9.70 (out of a possible 10). Eighteen year-old Asing left his two opponents Nat Young (Santa Cruz, USA) and Tonjo Darmaputra (IDN) to play catch-up for the rest of the heat.
Young and Darmaputra relegated into the sudden death RD2 heats.
Late yesterday afternoon at Canggu American surfer Conner Coffin (USA) finished off competition with a massive upset, defeating last year's Oakley World Pro Junior Bali Champion, Jack Freestone (AUS) in a see-sawing battle.
The lead changed multiple times throughout the heat, with Coffin getting the nod for his powerhouse carves.
The result saw the 17-year-old, surfer from Santa Barbara relegate the events no.1 seed and ASP world junior champion, Freestone, into the sudden death RD2 heats and progress directly into RD3 of competition.
Australia’s Davey Cathels (North Narrabeen, NSW, AUS) put his year's worth of experience on the ASP Prime and Star Series to good work when the wind changed and went onshore in the afternoon.
Cathels left his fellow competitors Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) and Matt Banting (AUS) in his wake, amassing the highest heat total of the day - 17.66 (out of a possible 20).(**)
