Makasar, S Sulawesi (Antara Bali) - Indonesian official said that at least two thousand of Indonesian islands are predicted to disappear or drowned by 2050 due to climate change which lead to the rising of sea levels.
"It is predicted that at least two thousand of Indonesian islands will disappear by 2050 due to the rise of the sea levels," said a spokesperson from the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime affairs and Fishery Achmad Poernomo, here Tuesday.
The matter should become an important issue to address considering that 42 million of Indonesians who live on lower islands and coastal areas would be homeless.
"People living on the coast lines will also be homeless, this is a serious threat," Achmad said.
Meanwhile, the ministry also expressed concern over the future challenges in addition to the rise of sea levels as the results of climate change, namely illegal fishing and insufficient fishery management that needs to be addressed properly.
Best solutions for these matters must be conducted immediately, Achmad said.
Besides, Indonesian fishermen's prosperity is another matter to be handled by the ministry, he pointed out. (WDY)
