Jakarta (Antara Bali)- Acting chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Taufiequrrachman Ruki has said he and other KPK's leaders disagree with a plan to revise the Law No. 30/2002 on KPK because it could weaken the agency.
KPK was not invited to discuss the planned revision of the law, Ruki said on the sidelines of a hearing with the parliament on Thursday.
He hopes that the House of Representatives' Commission III would ask for KPK's views when discussing the revision.
The government should improve the effectiveness of anti-graft institutions such as KPK, the Attorney General office and the Police, in fighting corruption in the country, according to him.
Earlier, acting deputy chairman of KPK Johan Budi said the planned revision of the law is to reduce the authorities of KPK including by prohibiting the use of wiretapping method.
"If the goal of the revision of the KPK Law is to abolish the agency's authority in prosecution and to reduce its tapping right, the public perception that there has been systematic attempts to weaken KPK in its fight against corruption proved true," Johan said.
Revision of the KPK Law , therefore, should not abolish the authority of KPK over the two points related to prosecution and tapping, he said.
On June 16, at a meeting with the Legislation Body of the House of Representative, Law and Human Right Minister Yasonna Hamonangn Laoly said that revision of the KPK Law will be included in the National Legislation Projection in 2015 under the initiative of the parliament.
A number of articles in the KPK law would be the targets of revision such as KPK's tapping authority.
Laoly said the implementation of the law on KPK has been problematic and disturbing efforts to fight and prevent corruption. (WDY)
