Housewives Run Second Highest Risk of HIV

Semarang (Antara Bali) - Housewives in Central Java run the second highest risk of being infected with HIV/AIDS,  Governor Bibit Waluyo said.

"The housewives were infected by HIV because of their husbands' bad lifestyle," the governor said at the launch of a "Save Mothers and Children from Sexual Abuse and HIV/AIDS" campaign here on Sunday.

The Central Java administration noted that in the January-June 2012 period, the number of HIV/AIDS cases in the region reached 663, consisting of 276 HIV cases and 387 AIDS cases.

The figure brought the number of HIV/AIDS cases since 1993 to 5,301.

The high number of housewives living with HIV/AIDS is feared to have an impact on the increasing number of children infected by the virus, he said. (IGT/T007)
