Gunung Agung Forest Fire Stretches Southwards

Denpasar (Antara Bali) - The fire that broke out in the Gunung Agung forest of the Karangasem regency, was still raging till Monday afternoon and has spread southwards to the Buana village in Bebandem district, Bali Province, an official said on Monday.

"The fact that the fire has spread was revealed after two other forest fires were discovered in the southern region," Nyoman Sutirtayasa, the Chief Executive of the Agency for Disaster Management (BPBD), Karangasem said.

He stated that 116 members of a joint team have been deployed in the region to extinguish the fire that is burning the forest area on a mountain, which is located at a height of 3,142 meters above sea level.

The joint team consists of members of the Bali and Karangasem BPBD, Karangasem's Emergency Service Response (ESR), Indonesian forced army (TNI) and police officers, who are still struggling to manually chop off the branches of the trees in order to stem the spreading fire.

"They are currently monitoring the area from the Tanah Aron and Yeh Kori posts," Sutirtayasa said.(IGT)
