Padang (Antara Bali) - The annual culinary festival in Padang, West Sumatra, aims to promote tourism in the province, declared Padang Mayor Fauzi Bahar here on Tuesday.
"The culinary festival has been part of an annual agenda to promote tourism in West Sumatra among both domestic and foreign tourists," Fauzi noted.
According to him, the culinary festival includes contests on making lemang, grinding chillies and making betel-nut juice.
Lemang is a traditional Malay food made of glutinous rice and coconut milk, cooked together in a hollow bamboo stick.
Since many people in Padang are reluctant to make lemang nowadays, the lemang-making contest is aimed at preserving the tradition in the city.(IGT)
