Indonesian "Dangdut" To Rock America

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Americans will get the taste of Indonesia's folk music "Dangdut" as Jakarta tunes up to organize shows across top USA cities.

"The embassy is working with local TV stations to create a "Dangdut goes to America reality show" in a bid to promote Indonesian music worldwide," said Indonesian ambassador to the USA Dino Patti Djalal after opening the American Batik Exhibition here on Tuesday.

Five Dangdut musicians would be performing in several places in the USA, where this kind of music was never heard before, Dino said.

"They would be placed there like fish out of its pond and would be performing in Texas where the famous cowboys are, Ghetto area in Chicago and in the New York's Wall Street and other areas," he said.

The Dangdut promotion is part of a campaign to introduce Indonesia's folk music and culture to the Americans.

The Dangdut form was chosen because it truly reflects the Indonesian music and almost every Indonesian knows it, he said.(IGT/T007)
