Kuala Lumpur (Antara Bali) - A landslide struck an aboriginal village in Cameron Highlands, a famous tourism spot in east Malaysian state of Pahang on Sunday evening, leaving seven people dead and two others injured, said state media Bernama on Monday.
Local police told reporters that the tragedy happened at 5:45 p.m. local time on Sunday during heavy rain. Three houses have been buried under the mud and two others slightly damaged.
The two survivors are receiving medical treatment in a nearby hospital. Residents living near the landslide site have been evacuated.
There are 145 houses in the aboriginal settlement with a population of 1,300.
The Cameron Highlands is a tea plantation region and former British colonial hill station retreat that is popular with tourists.
Malaysia has suffered a series of landslide disasters in recent years.
In May, a landslide hit an orphanage in a rural town just outside Kuala Lumpur, killing 16 people, mostly young boys.(*)
