The opening ceremony of the two-day BDF, themed "Democracy to Increase Peace and Stability," started at 10 am Central Indonesia Standard Time (WITA) at Nusantara Room of Bali International Convention Center.
Besides President Yudhoyono as chairman, several heads of state/government will deliver a speech at the opening ceremony namely South Korean President Lee Myung-bak as co-chairman, Sultan Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam, and Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
Four heads of state/government, 18 ministerial-level officials, and participants from 71 countries attended the 3rd Bali Democracy Forum to make the number of participants to increase dramatically.
The first BDF in 2008 was attended by participants from 40 countries and rose to 48 countries in the second the following year.
Participants of the forum this time will discuss the relation between democracy and peace, and to identify how development can increase peace process.
They will also exchange views and experiences on the way how to prevent conflicts in democratic system and to create a sustainable political stability.
The way how democratic system can help prevent conflict and violence, and why democratic and economic progress necessary for peace development will also be discussed in the third Bali Democratic Forum.
BDF's main objective this time is to build a forum for regional cooperation in an effort to improve political development through dialogs and exchange of views and experiences to strengthen democratic institutions and to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity in Asia.
President Yudhoyono as chairman and his South Korean counterpart Lee Yung-bak as co-chairman are scheduled to deliver a joint statement after the opening ceremony of the third Bali Democratic Forum.(*)
