"European Union businesses make important contributions to the development of the economy and core industry in Indonesia. Collectively, Europe is the third biggest investor in Indonesia in terms of foreign direct investment," BKPM Deputy Chief for Investment Promotion Himawan Hariyoga said.
According to data from the BKPM, foreign direct investment from Europe rose by an average of 35 percent in each of the past five years to US$3.9 billion in 2014 from US$1.3 billion in 2010, not to mention investment in the oil and gas and financial sectors.
In the first half of 2015, investment proposals from Europe for Indonesia reached US$1.2 billion.
Hariyoga expressed the hope that the presence of the EU Desk will enable the BKPM to achieve the investment target of Rp3,500 trillion for the next five years.
"To meet the target, foreign support including the EU Desk is welcome. We want investment, along with manufacturing industries and export-oriented industries, to serve as the main pillars of economic growth," he said.
European Union Ambassador to Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam Vincent Guérend said European companies can boast of a proven track record to realize investment projects in Indonesia.
The European Union desk is part of the European Union-Indonesia Trade Cooperation Facility (TCF), a four-year partnership program with the Indonesian government to increase economic development through trade and investment. (WDY)
