Purwokerto, C Java, (Antara Bali) - A major earthquake rocked southern Central Java on Saturday with epicenter in the Indian ocean, the meteorology office said.
The quake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale,hit at 0.4.44 local time centered at 8.49 degrees south latitude and 108.96 degrees east longitude, and at a depth of 10 kilometers, the agency said.
It said the quake would not cause tsunami, but it gave no details about any casualty or material losses.
A woman Cahya in Purwokerto, the district of Banyumas, said she was shocked when she saw a pail rocking in her kitchen, and she almost tumbled.
"I was aware of what had happened after my husband told me that it was an earthq1uake," she said.
A resident of the village of Kalikudi, Cilacap, Maryam described the quake as strong that plates and glasses at the rack jolted causing a slight noise.
"I was in the bathroom preparing for morning prayer when the quake hit that made me run out," she said.
The quake was also felt in Kebumen, Purworejo, Wonosobo, and Yogyakarta. (WDY)
