Jakarta (Antara Bali) -- PT Pertamina is preparing itself to face the greatest hike in fuel consumption, which could be 40 percent higher than usual, at the peak of people's homebound journeys a day or two before Eid.

"Fuel consumption rises by at least 40 percent over the normal national level, a day or two before Lebaran (Eid)," the company's director of marketing and commerce, Ahmad Bambang, said at an iftar at Hotel Indonesia on Friday evening.

He added that across the country, fuel consumption could soar 40 percent above the normal rate, while it could rise 80 to 100 percent in Java.

In addition, Pertamina has projected that gasoline consumption from 15 days before (D-15) to 15 days after (D+15) Eid will rise 18 percent on an average, from the usual everyday level of 76,259 kiloliters to 89,817 kiloliters.

According to Bambang, Pertamina's estimate for normal gasoline consumption was 82,000 kiloliters per day. However, a day before Eid, it is expected to peak to 106.3 thousand kiloliters and to 100.9 thousand kiloliters three days after the festival.

Moreover, the consumption of subsidized diesel fuel is predicted to drop 11 percent from the normal daily level of 37,228 kiloliters to 33,250 kiloliters.

To meet demand, Bambang affirmed that the company will increase the number of fuel trucks for distribution by using the ones that usually serve industries.

"Industries are closed from five days before till five days after Eid. So the trucks can be used," he explained.

Bambang further noted that Pertamina will be flexible with regard to optimizing distribution to filling stations.

"We will deploy more trucks and drivers from Jakarta and industries, and will also operate 24 hours a day. In case of traffic jams, distribution will be carried using routes that are less congested," he pointed out.

  "If traffic is headed east, distribution will be carried out from east to west," he stated.

 Furthermore, Bambang believes that filling stations along the northern coastal routes between Tegal, Semarang and Yogyakarta will see the highest fuel consumption. (WDY)
