The seed variety called Bima 14 Batara, is grown over a total of 0.5 hectares of land in the village of Sambik Rindang, in the regency of North Lombok,Hidayat Nyakman, the president director of the state owned fertilizer company, said.
North Lombok was chosen as the soil and the environment there are suitable for the corn crop, Hidayat Nyakman said here on Tuesday.
He said the corn productivity in North Lombvok is 5.73 tons per hectare , lower than the average productivity of 6.21 tons per hectares in West Nusa Tenggara. "Therefore, we want to improve the productivity of corn in that district," he said.
He said Petro Hi-Corn could yield up to 12.9 tons of dry corn grain per hectare. In addition the variety is resistant to plant diseases and has high protein content of 10 percent.
"We hope that district would contribute significantly to boosting the country's corn production to support the food self sufficiency program," he added. (WDY)
