Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The chief patron of the Great Indonesia Party (Gerindra), Prabowo Subianto, met with King Abdullah II of Jordan here on Tuesday evening.

The meeting was warm and cordial, and the two also seized the opportunity to give a military salute to each other.

"This is a semi-formal meeting and has no special agenda. The two leaders have often met on various previous occasions such as in Amman, Jordan, and several other forums," Gerindra's Deputy Secretary General, Sudaryono, remarked in a press statement received here by Antara.

He noted that King Abdullah II is visiting Indonesia to honor an invitation to be the keynote speaker at the "Multaqa Sufi International" seminar organized by one of the country's biggest Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama, which is scheduled to be held at the Jakarta Convention Center on Wednesday.

King Abdullah II and Prabowo have been friends since they were serving as soldiers in their countries. The two are also the alumni of Fort Banning, a military institution in the US that trains Special Forces.

King Abdullah II arrived at Jakarta's Haling Perdanakusumah Airbase at around 3.30 p.m. local time and was received and welcomed by several state officials.

At around 4.20 p.m. local time, he arrived at a hotel and was welcomed by Prabowo. The King thereafter requested Prabowo to join him in his room for further discussions. (*/DWA)
