Jakarta (Antara Bali) - In response to the 7.2 Richter Scale earthquake that hit Central Visayas in the Philippines last Tuesday (Oct 15) ASEAN is sending relief kits to help affected families, its secretariat said.

According to s written statement from the ASEAN secretariat received here on Sunday, the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) deployed its disaster emergency response team and the ASEAN Emergency Rapid Assessment Team (ASEAN-ERAT) to coordinate with their counterparts in the Philippines, conduct initial rapid assessments, and prepare relief items to assist communities in the earthquake-hit areas.

The AHA Centre has released 250 family tents to accommodate up to 1,250 evacuees. To ensure that the people living in evacuation shelters are well equipped, the AHA Centre also deployed 250 boxes of ASEAN Family Kits which contain blankets, sarongs, shirts, kitchen utensils, water purifier, hygiene kits, and other useful items.

Each Family Kit can cover up to 5 persons in a family. Most of the relief items, which are managed by the AHA Centre through the Disaster Emergency Logistics System for ASEAN (DELSA), have arrived today (Oct.19) in Tagbilaran, Bohol Province - the closest point to the most affected areas.

DELSA was established with the support from the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).

"Unfortunately, natural calamities are a regular occurrence in our region. Therefore, ASEAN will continue to be tested in terms of our capacity to respond to disasters", said Alicia Dela Rosa Bala, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. (*/DWA)
