The epicenter of the quake which struck at 00.56 western Indonesian time was located at 4.35 degrees southern latitude and 133.87 degrees eastern longitude or 76 km southeast of Kaimana, 394 km southwest of the West Papua provincial capital Manokwari or 3,015 km northeast of Jakarta at a depth of 48 km, Yuharman, head of the Kotabumi geophysics station in Lampung province, said quoting a BMKG report.
There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage. A magnitude 5.3 quake is considered moderate and capable of causing considerable damage on land.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic activity.
West Papua is one of quake-prone areas in Indonesia. A series of powerful earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 7.6 hit Manokwari in January 2009.
At least four people were killed and several homes and public facilities damaged in the disaster. The disaster also forced thousands of people to flee their damaged homes. (*/DWA)
