Pontianak, W Kalimantan (Antara Bali) - Police in West Kalimantan province foiled an attempt of smuggling 29 illegal migrant workers to the Malaysian state of Sarawak at the weekend, a spokesman said.
The illegal migrant workers who came from West Java were arrested in Pontianak last Saturday at 08.00 p.m. as they were about to depart for Sarawak aboard a bus, West Kalimantan police spokesman Adj Snr Comr Mukson Munandar said on Sunday.
"They could not produce necessary documents to work abroad so we arrested them," he said.
Mukson said the police also have arrested a Pontianak resident, identified by his initials as Ud, who is strongly believed to be a supplier of illegal migrant workers to the neighboring country.
"Ud has promised well-paid jobs to the would-be migrant workers," he said.
Based on the results of a preliminary investigation, Ud acted as a supplier of illegal workers by collaborating with somebody else in West Java to lure the would-be illegal migrant workers, he said.(*/DWA)
