Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Bank Indonesia will safeguard the fluctuations of the country's rupiah currency so that its rate will not depreciate sharply compared to that of other Asian currencies, BI governor Darmin Nasution.

"We will always be in the market. We will not let the rupiah to depreciate too low. Minimally we will assure it will fluctuate like that of other Asian currencies," he said here on Monday.

Early this year the rupiah rate against the US dollar was recorded at Rp9,100-Rp9,200 which was lower than at the end of 2011 recorded at Rp9,000 per US dollar.

Darmin said so long as no solution had been found in the European economic crisis fluctuations would continue to happen.

"This will happen across the world especially in the emerging markets because no settlement of the European crisis has emerged which is believed to be able to settle the problem," he said.

So long as the situation continued, he said, moreover the US economic conditions are relatively improving transfers of funds from other currencies to the US dollar would happen and this would make the rates of various currencies suppressed.(IGT/T007)
