Karawang (Antara Bali) - National Police Headquarters  officers arrested 77 illegal Afghan immigrants in a rest area on the Jakarta - Cikampek tollroad in the wee hours of Sunday (Jan 8).

Tito Andriano, a spokesman of the Karawang Immigration Office, said the National Police Headquarters officers later handed  the 77 illegal immigrants to  Karawang immgiration.

He said  the 77 illegal immigrants were handed to the Karawang immigration office because they were arrested within its office's jurisdiction.

The illegal immigrants said they had  intended to go to Australia to seek asylum.

They said they were on their way from Jakarta to Surabaya, East Java, from where they would take a boat to Australia.

Meanwhile, according to the acting head of the Karawang Immigration Office, Hertjansyah Wirandinata,  said  17 of the illegal Afghan immigrant group  had escaped so that his office was no only holding 60 of them.(IGT/T007)
