Beijing (Antara Bali) - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) will cooperate with the Narcotics Bureau of the Hong Kong Police to handle crimes as well as the trafficking of narcotics, psychotropics, and prohibited substances.
The cooperation had been discussed during BNN Head Comr Gen. Budi Waseso's meeting with the commissioner of Hong Kong Police on Thursday, Police's representative at the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong Commissioner Danur Lientara informed Antara here on Thursday.
Based on data, Indonesia has become one of the main hubs for the trade of drugs. Several types of drugs are trafficked and smuggled by international syndicates as Indonesia has a large young population and has become a major drug market.
China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and West Africa are part of an international drug network that has been identified by the BNN.
Various types of drugs, particularly amphetamine-type stimulants, Ecstasy, and crystal methamphetamine, have been smuggled by international syndicates.
The BNN has discovered 41 new types of drugs in Indonesia, 18 of which have been included in the list of Ministerial Regulation No. 13 of 2014.
Indonesia was the largest drug market in Asia and also one of the countries that produces drugs. In June 2015, the number of drug users had reached 4.2 million and then increased sharply to 5.9 million in November 2015.
This year, the Narcotics Bureau of the Hong Kong Police has recorded 871 cases of drug-related crimes in the first semester, compared to 956 cases last year.
In addition, Waseso was scheduled to hold an event to spread awareness on drugs among Indonesian migrant workers and organizations of the Indonesian community in Hong Kong.
"As many as 36 citizens are detained in jail houses in Hong Kong in drug-related cases," he remarked.
"Most of them served as couriers. The migrant workers are deceived by international syndicates to smuggle drugs," he pointed out.
He urged the Indonesian migrant workers to be wary of people who offer packages.
"Do not be easily persuaded by strangers, who offer benefits for transporting packages," he affirmed. (WDY)
