Padang, W Sumatra (Antara Bali) - The Chief of the National Mandate Party's Honorary Council Amien Rais has lauded President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) for his firm stand to deal with rampant cases of illicit drug trafficking in the country.

"President Jokowi has firmly ordered the elements of the nation to be united in their fight against illicit drug trafficking and the move is worthy of our praise," he said at a meeting of the party's branch in the West Sumatra provincial capital of Padang on Thursday.

He did not rule out the possibility that the nation will lose one generation if drug abuse continues to take place.

"From the information I have obtained, a country was attacked and defeated after being weakened by drugs. We do not rule out the possibility that this will happen to Indonesia if the question of drugs is not overcome immediately," he said.

Drug abuse violates not only positive law but also religious and customary laws, he noted.

"For its part, let us declare war against drugs by preventing drugs from entering our environment," he said.

President Widodo has called for intense efforts to fight the distribution of narcotic drugs in view of the growing seriousness of the problem.

In a limited meeting with the chief officials of offices concerned with drug problems recently, he said narcotics' trafficking had topped the list of problems being faced by Indonesia at the moment.

In view of this, concerted efforts must be made to fight this with all offices concerned with improving their coordination.

Every concerned institution must keep aside sector egoism in tackling the problem and they must work together to fight this menace, the President said during the meeting. (WDY)
