Makassar, S.Sulawesi (Antara Bali) - A Chinese company, Sinohydro Corporation Limited (SCL), will build a hydro power plant with a capacity of 2 x 100 megawatts in Enrekang district, South Sulawesi province.

"The construction will start by 2017 and will continue for four to five years," head of Enrekang administration, Muslimin Bando, said here on Thursday.

Enrekang district, he said, has a promising hydropower potential as two major rivers, Saddang and Mata Allo, pass through it besides many other small rivers.

The head of the Energy, Oil and Gas Division of Enrekang's Mining and Energy office, Zainal explained that the project will be centered in the Papi village.

"The investment will reach Rp5 trillion," he noted.

The power plant will be built on approximately 2,500 hectares of land, 80 percent of which will be located in Enrekang and the rest in Toraja and Pinrang districts.

"The hydropower project will use a series of dams to control the river flow," Zainal said.

South Sulawesi governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo welcomed the investment plan.

He said the province has a rich hydro potential, and the local administration can actively invite domestic as well as foreign investors to exploit it.

"Enrekang is an area rich in water, and is very suitable for hydropower. We strongly support any investor who wants to participate in development projects," the governor said. (WDY)
