Surabaya, E Java (Antara Bali) - The House of Representatives Commission I has extended support for the development of a submarine-construction industry, which will be overseen by state-owned shipyard PT PAL in Tanjung Perak, Surabaya, East Java.

"The commission has urged the Defence Ministry to support PT PAL by allocating a budget for the submarine-construction industry," the Deputy Chairman of Commission I, Hanafi Rais, said on Friday.

"We visited PT PAL, which is working on submarine and ship development. We heard about the problems related to their budget," Rais remarked.

The visit was also aimed at evaluating the cooperation between PT PAL and South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for the construction of submarines.

Rais pointed out that the Commission I had asked PT PAL to re-evaluate the cooperation pattern in terms of the submarine modernization as part of efforts to avoid technical problems.

"We asked for a clarification and evaluation related to the cooperation. We also asked them to explain the process of submarine construction," he said.

Previously, PT PAL had proposed a budget through the state capital participation program (PNM), amounting to Rp1.5 trillion for the construction of three units of submarines and other infrastructure.

In a view of that, he noted, PT PAL could increase the budget capital for submarine construction through export credit or other payment instruments.

"If PT PAL uses the PNM, the report should be clear. There are many alternative financing options. We have been discussing the budget problems for the last two months. Therefore, there must be some assurance," he remarked.

The outcome of the visit will be used during the meeting with the Ministry of Defence, where Commission I will urge the ministry to support the budget for the construction of submarines. (WDY)
