Jakarta (Antara Bali) - A total of 54,434 prisoners across Indonesia received special remissions on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr.

"This year, the government, through the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, extends special Eid remissions to 54,434 prisoners," Head of the Sub-Directorate of Information and Communication of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights M. Akbar Hadiprobowo noted in a statement received here.

He remarked that the special remissions were granted under two categories with the first, RK-1, being given to those prisoners, who after receiving the remissions, are still completing their jail terms and prisoners under RK-2 category, who after the remissions, become free men.

"A total of 545 Muslim prisoners are freed (after remissions)," Akbar revealed.

The special Eid remissions are given to Muslims prisoners who met the administrative and substantive requirements including having served their jail terms for minimally six months and not being recorded in the F Register book (record of disciplinary violations) and being active in counseling programs.

"As compared to last year, the number of prisoners receiving remissions this year was lower. In 2014, the number of prisoners receiving remissions reached 56,704 or 32.5 percent of the total 167,449 prisoners," Akbar stated.

He stated that the West Java regional office of the justice and human rights ministry granted the biggest number of remissions, affecting 9,744, with 95 of them falling under the RK-2 category and being set free.
East Java ranked second, extending remissions to 5,939, and Jakarta came third, granting remissions to 5,114. (WDY)
