Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesian seas have great food potential that should be tapped into to serve as the backbone of the nation's food resources, Navy Chief Admiral Ade Supandi said.
He made the remarks while giving a public lecture on food resilience from the maritime perspective at the Bogor-based Institute of Agriculture (IPB) in West Java on Monday.
Indonesia, whose waters account for two-thirds of its territory, should be able to optimally utilize its marine resources to create and maintain food sovereignty, the navy chief emphasized.
Supandi further noted that Indonesia has large food resources it can utilize to meet people's needs. It can even become the world's largest maritime food producer.
He added that to meet the food demand from the maritime perspective, the need for transportation must also be taken into account as it serves as the means of distributing food resources to various regions in the country.
"This is because the country is an island nation," he pointed out. (WDY)
