Jakarta (Antara Bali) - All countries, including developing and developed nations, should be responsible to preserve the environment, Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla stated.

"We need mutual cooperation to preserve the environment, and it is not only the responsibility of Indonesia or other developing countries but also the entire world," Kalla emphasized here on Monday.

The vice president noted in his speech during the opening of "Tropical Landscape Summit: A Global Investment Opportunity" organized by the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM).

Kalla remarked that Indonesia has implemented several policies in order to improve efficiency, reduce the damage, and use environment-friendly equipment.

The vice president noted that Indonesia has increased its efficiency in the mining sector by eliminating the export of raw mining materials and processing the materials using smelters.

"There are many things that we have done to implement the steps we have agreed upon. Let us implement (the agreement) together, and do not blame Indonesia and other tropical countries. However, they are still using our cheap furniture that advanced countries supposedly should be paying more," Kalla pointed out.

Hence, Kalla suggested that the advanced countries should not only urge the developing countries to preserve the environment but also respect the developing countries and ensure mutual cooperation.

Indonesia is providing potential investment opportunities to preserve the environment through the development of renewable energy.

"We are also offering incentives to business corporations who invest in the environment-friendly sector by purchasing geothermal energy at a higher price and providing tax relief as well," Kalla stated.

Several officials from across the globe who attended the event include former president of Mexico Felipe Calderon, UN Under-Secretary General and UNDP Associate Administrator Gina Casar, and several working cabinet ministers. (WDY)
