Jakarta (Antara Bali) - National Development Planning Minister/Head of National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) Andrinof Chaniago supported the idea of East Kalimantan Governor Awang Faroek to require mining firms to build power plants.

"I agree with the idea of the governor to require major mining companies to build power plants. We will force big mining firms to develop electricity generating facilities in their operation areas," the minister said after delivering his keynote speech in a regional government meeting in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Wednesday.

Chaniago said the criteria of large companies which would be obliged to build power plants could be formulated later on.

For example, he said, companies to be obliged to build power plants are those whose production capacity already reached 20 million tons per annum.

"They should be willing to build a 200 MW plant. If they refused to do it, I do not think they have reasons to reject it," he said. (WDY)
