Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a regulation which allows the accelerated construction of Sumatra toll road linking the eastern to western tips of the island.

The President signed the regulation on September 17 to boost the development of areas in the island to support the national economic growth, the Cabinet Secretariat said in its official website.

In the first phase, the project will cover Medan-Binjai, Palembang-Simpang Indralaya, Pekanbaru-Dumai, and Bakauheni-Terbanggi Besar toll roads.

"State-owned construction company PT Hutama Karya will build the four toll roads under an assignment scheme," according to the presidential regulation.

To realize the project, PT Hutama Karya will rely on funding sources such as state capital participation, two-step loans and bonds.

The other funding sources include loans from financial institutions such as multilateral financial institutions and other funds from investment board according to the law, it said.

The President asked ministries, heads of government institutions, governors, and district heads/mayors to support PT Hutama Karya according to their respective authority.

Yudhoyono will end his second term of office on October 20, 2014 when he will transfer his post to President-elect Joko Widodo who won the July 9 presidential polls.  (WDY)
