Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs is cooperating with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for enhancing marine and fishery resources' capacity to ensure sustainable management.

"The fisheries and maritime affairs ministry and the FAO are committed to continue their mutual cooperation," Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said in a press statement released on Saturday.

Only recently, Minister Sutardjo had paid a working visit to the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, to hold bilateral talks with FAO Secretary General Graziano Da Silva.

The meeting was aimed at strengthening the capacity and capability of the country to supervise its marine and fishery resources through cooperation with the FAO, coupled with the Infrastructure Development for Space Oceanography (INDESO) project, he said.

The INDESO was strategically equipped to monitor the Indonesian water condition and help improve the capacity of human resources, he said.

The INDESO project is a concrete effort made by the government to monitor and protect the Indonesian waters, particularly in the so-called Coral Triangle (CT), he said.

Last year, Indonesia cooperated with the FAO in implementing 16 programs. Since early this year, both sides have developed 13 new programs/projects worth US$13.3 million using various grants. (WDY)
